来月19日から、George Harrison のドキュメント映画「Living In A Material World」(監督:マーティン・スコセッシ)が公開されるようですね。(Twitter フォロワーさんから教えていただきました、ありがとうございました。)
僕はビートルズの4人の中で、ジョージが1番好きなんです。多分AOR好きにとってはビートルズ4人の中で1番馴染みがあるからなんですね。ジョージの自己レーベル「ダークホース」から、駆け出しのDavid Fosterが在籍した「Attitudes」が2枚のアルバムをリリース、その流れからか、ジョージのExtra Texture (Read All About It)(1975), Thirty Three & 1/3(1976)等にFosterが参加したりしています。今回はそんなジョージの良きプロデューサーで、熱狂的なビートルズフリークで知られるELOのJeff Lynnの作品に少し触れたいと思います。この2人と言えばまず、「Traveling Wilburys」ですね。

実は「Traveling Wilburys」は各メンバーの在籍するレコード会社が異なる関係で、ウィルベリーという架空の兄弟という設定で実名を隠しクレジットされています。実際はというと、

しかしいつ聴いてもいいですね、最高の楽曲です!ジェフもプロデューサーとしても絶好調で、ヒット作品を連発、ノリノリの時期でしたしね。続いては、そんなジェフのELOでの懐かしいヒット曲を一つ。♬Sweet Talking Woman by ELO
これぞ「ELO」サウンド!ジェフによる抜群のポップセンスで、プログレ的なアプローチもありますがトータルではかなり聴きやすいELOサウンドを確立させましたね。もしビートルズが解散せずにテクノロジーを駆使してアルバムを作ってたとしたらこんなサウンドだったかも知れません。(ELOは大好きなので、また別の回で改めて取り上げたいと思ってますので今回はこの辺で。。)余談ですが,ユニコーン奥田民生プロデュース,PUFFYのデビューシングル「アジアの純真」のサウンドアレンジはもう完全にELOでしたね。ここまで真似るとパロディですよね(笑)。
